CLUTCH
Description
Founded in 1991 in Germantown, Maryland, Clutch is made up of guitarist Tim Sult, singer Neil Fallon, bassist Dan Maines, and guitarist Jean-Paul Gaster.
Through increasing the number of shows, the ensemble has established a local reputation. Following the release of their well-known single, “Pitchfork,” in seven parts, they caught the attention of Earache Records, who released the legendary EP Passive Restraints. Clutch signs with EastWest Records following this excursion, and the label releases their debut album, Transnational Speedway League, in 1993. Two years later, the group’s first public appearance was provided by an album of the same name released by Atlantic Records, which had three psychologically charged singles: “Big News,” “Spacegrass,” and “Escape from the Prison Planet.” This early stage of Clutch’s career was marked by a lengthy and successful North American tour with Marilyn Manson. The quartet signed with Columbia in 1998 to release Elephant Riders. Clutch then returns to Atlantic in 2001 for their fourth studio album, Pure Rock Fury, which has over six figures in sales and features their first song, “Careful With that Mic,” in the Top 40. However, because to issues with the company, they must wait three years until the brilliant Blast Tyrant is released on the independent DRT Entertainment label.
For example, the group self-produced the studio album Jam Room and their first live album, Live at the Googleplex, under their own label, River Road Records. Megaforce Records would eventually edit these two works a few years later. Clutch travels extensively and continuously from 2004 to 2007, not just in North America but also in England, continental Europe, Scandinavia, and Australia. The group thereafter achieves unmatched playing proficiency and creates its most ambitious songs. With a decade of experience, Clutch outlasts and/or endures longer than the majority of modern groups from the late 1990s.
Robot Hive/Exodus (2005, DRT), Clutch’s seventh studio album, was produced by J. Robbins and marks another tour with a diversity that few rock groups can match. In 2007, “Gravel Road,” the final RH/E title, was followed by “From Beale Street to Oblivion.” A more straightforward and confident blues style that enables the former Germantown High School choirs to reach a new peak. Not only is the album’s single “Electric Worry” another Top 40 rock hit, but its catchphrase, “Bang Bang Bang Bang, Vamanos, Vamanos,” and its energetic ending with guitar and battery solos make it a classic instantané of Clutch. The four band members and their longtime manager, Jack, began planning the creation of their own label, Weathermaker Music, in 2008. Originally self-distributed, Weathermaker Music quickly establishes a distribution partnership with Sony/RED, followed by Rough Trade Distribution/Believe and its European sub-distributors starting in 2013. Strange Cousins From the West, Clutch’s ninth studio album, was released in 2009 and peaked at number 37 on the Billboard pop/vent charts, making it the band’s first major commercial success! Earth Rocker, released by Weathermaker Music in 2013, directly achieved the top spot on the Billboard Top Hard Rock Albums ranking, the sixth position on the Top Rock Albums ranking, and the fifth position on the Top 200 Billboard. Earth Rocker is said to be heavier and faster than its predecessors.
Through their own label, Weathermaker Music, Clutch organized their eleventh album studio, Psychic Warfare, in 2015. The album ranks first in the Hard Rock and Rock Billboard rankings and eleventh in the Top 200 Billboard. Weathermaker Music released Clutch’s 12th album, Book of Bad Decisions, on September 7, 2018. It peaked at number one on the Billboard Hard Rock charts and at number 16 in the Top 200. The album also appears on a number of European and Australian charts. According to Rolling Stone, “Book of Bad Decisions is another excellent album by Clutch in his last years, free of the saturating tones and rugosity that have made their concerts legendary.” Clutch is regarded as one of the greatest rock bands of the current era.
Decades of international tours have been a major factor in Clutch’s success. Fans enjoy and continue to support this ensemble, whether it’s in clubs throughout the world or at major festivals across multiple continents.
Weathermaker will release the 180-gram vinyl version of their 1995 album of the same name in 2025. This trip will be accompanied by a tour of Europe and North America, during which the ensemble will perform the entire record in order. La production, la scénographie et l’éclairage seront conçus pour renforcer l’ambiance unique de cet album révolutionnaire. The ensemble is eager to give its fans this one-of-a-kind show.
